About us
NIIOS (Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery) is an independent centre for innovation, practice and donor tissue expertise in corneal transplantation.
Founded by ophthalmologist and researcher Dr. Gerrit Melles, NIIOS has initiated and contributed to the development of minimally invasive corneal transplantation techniques that are now adopted by corneal surgeons around the world. Our work focuses on improving treatment options for patients with corneal diseases such as Fuchs endothelial dystrophy, keratoconus and bullous keratopathy.
Today, NIIOS brings together three complementary domains.
Research & Innovation
We develop and refine surgical techniques, tissue preparation methods and emerging technologies that advance the field of corneal transplantation. Scientific research and practical experience continuously inform one another.
Tissue Lab & Professional Practice
Through our Tissue Lab, workshops, online best practice sessions and international collaborations, surgeons and eye bank professionals have the opportunity to practice, refine and exchange techniques in a setting where craftsmanship and innovation meet. We believe that excellence develops through practice.
Donor Tissue Expertise
Through Amnitrans EyeBank Rotterdam (AER), we recover, evaluate, prepare and distribute donor corneal tissue for transplantation, research and innovation. Our work aims to maximize the respectful and responsible use of every altruistically donated tissue.
Working across the entire chain
What makes NIIOS distinctive is the close interaction between research, professional practice and eye banking. Continuous feedback between these domains enables rapid translation from scientific insight to practical application.
Innovation at NIIOS is driven not only by science and technology, but also by people. Team members bring diverse backgrounds, interests and ways of thinking to their work. Curiosity, craftsmanship and perspectives shaped by life beyond the laboratory often lead to unexpected ideas and new approaches. We believe that creativity emerges where different disciplines and personal passions meet.
